What Did You Find Out?

These characters are fictional but their situations are not.

“Brian, how are you?”  Dr. Bates was a friend of Brian’s parents and what had been a casual question about swollen, often cold fingers and hands had turned into a life changing situation.

“I’m okay, Doc.  Question is did you find something at that show you were at that can help me?”

“I did.  But let’s talk for a minute. Tell me if you think your hands are getting better, the same or worse.  Sometimes localized scleroderma clears over time and I want to make sure we’re not jumping the gun. ”

Dr. Bates saw the hopeful look on Brian’s face. “I know right?  That would be perfect.  I honestly don’t think that’s the situation here but let’s take it slowly. So tell me about your hands.”

Girl On A Mission

These characters are fictional but their situations are not.

Denise Abbott was a girl on a mission.  She reminded her mother every five minutes today was the day she was going to get her very own phototherapy machine.  Her mother reminded her every five minutes they were only going to talk about it.

“I don’t know,” Mrs. Abbott replied to her husband’s questions.  “Dr. Bates says our insurance will cover a home unit.  I’ll bring home all the information he brought back from that conference he went to. “

“I hope it’s true!  Denise’s skin looks so much better and it’s worth all the driving.  Still, to have it here?  Paid for with insurance?  Yeah, I could get excited about that!”

“Let’s go!” yelled Denise.  “I won’t complain about waiting if we go early. Please Mom.”

Mrs. Abbott smiled at her husband.  “No complaining? I do love her good intentions.”  She picked up her purse and said, “Denise! Are you ready yet?  I want to go.”  They laughed as Denise ran full speed out the front door.

Unnoticed Changes

These characters are fictional but their situations are not.

rod, cathi, daavlin, phototherapy, psoriasisCathi insisted on visiting Dr. Bates at Rod’s appointment.

“I want to know what he says about something else besides drugs!” she exclaimed. “You can ignore the warnings but I can’t.”

Rod Hughes rolled his eyes.  He had injections for years and he felt fine.  Dr. Bates had mentioned something else that might work but why change? Besides why would he switch from a once every four months treatment to something every week?

Dr. Bates walked into his office and sat across from Rod and Cathi.  He hesitated a moment and then said, “Rod it’s been a long time since we discussed changing your treatment.”  Rod started to say something.  “Hear me out Rod.  I am seeing changes you might not think is related to biologic treatment.  But I think they are. It’s a conversation we really need to have.”

Waiting

Julia Miller looked at Sydney. She was getting so big. Not big enough to grow out of eczema. Sigh.  But Dr. Bates nurse told her they just might have the answer for Sydney. Safe, effective, easy peasy.  It seemed too good to be true.

Denise Abbott wanted to drive herself to her appointment. “I understand what’s going on!” she exclaimed to her mother.  “The only difference is Dr. Bates is going to give me something to use at home.”  Mrs. Abbott smiled and said “Unless you’re paying for it you’ll need me to figure out the insurance.”  Denise frowned and then “It better work as good as the office visit does! People have finally stopped staring.”

Rod Hughes’ psoriasis was under control using a biologic treatment. But his wife Cathy had become increasingly concerned about the potential side effects.  He didn’t care. That stuff never happened in his opinion. It was just something the FDA made them put on the literature. How could something that looked like a glorified tanning booth keep his skin as clear as the injections did?

Brian Johnson had started to panic. The term scleroderma was slowly working its way through his consciousness.  He veered between denial and anger.  All he could envision was a slow painful future in which he became less Brian and more “sufferer”.  Dr. Bates thought he had a plan to change that up a little bit.  Brian hoped so.

Dosimetry Myth Vs. Reality

daavlin, phototherapy, dosimetry

Myth: It’s all the same lamps, so the only difference between different manufacturer’s clinical phototherapy machines is cosmetic appearance.

Reality: There are significant differences between machines equipped with integrated dosimetry and those without it. If your goal is accurate dose control for optimum treatment outcome, Daavlin offers significant advantages over timer controllers.

Here are the benefits of dosimetry for you and your patients.

  • Faster clearing
  • Less risk of burning
  • A better chance of successful treatment
  • Lower long term side effect risks

Daavlin uses a lot of its resources for research and development.  Dosimetry is just one example of that. If you’re interested in the data about how and why it works this link (http://daavlin.com/for-physicians/daavlin-dosimetry-for-better-patient-outcomes/) will explain it in more detail.  This is the kind of work we do behind the scenes that makes your practice better, easier and more profitable.
