Summer Sun & Phototherapy: Tips you Should Know

Understanding how the UV rays of the summer sun can impact your treatments is vital to the success of your phototherapy regimen.  As summer approaches, we’d like to offer some guidance for better protecting your skin during both phototherapy sessions and daily life. Here are some quick tips to help you safeguard your skin:

    1. Sunscreen is Non-Negotiable: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to all exposed skin areas when outside. Re-apply every two hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating. However, before phototherapy, make sure that any sunscreen that was applied for outdoor activities is completely removed to maximize your treatment’s benefits. Quick Tip: Exposure to the summer sun without the use of sunblock, could result in a higher tolerance to UV light due to a process called “photoadaptation” and thus impact the effectiveness of your phototherapy treatments.
    1. Hydration is Key: Keep your skin hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Hydrated skin is more resilient and better able to reap the benefits of phototherapy.
    2. Cover Up: Wear protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts, pants, and wide-brimmed hats, to shield your skin from harmful UV rays. Learn more HERE.
    3. Timing Matters: Schedule outdoor activities during off-peak sun hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. When UV rays are the strongest; opt for early or late afternoon outings instead.
    4. Moisturize Regularly: Regularly maintain skin moisture using a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer. This helps to prevent dryness, which can sometimes occur with phototherapy. Learn more HERE.
    5. Consult Your Dermatologist: Finally, always consult your dermatologist for personalized advice on skin care during the summer when undergoing phototherapy. They can provide tailored recommendations based on your specific skin type and condition.
